I love all the Shadow Children book, and highly recommend them to anybody who hasn't read them Margaret Peterson Haddix is one of my favorite writers. What I love about the Shadow Children Series is that reading the stories takes you to a possible world of today. Another thing I love about the books is that one of the daycare kids is who hipped me to it. A series for young teens but adults will find the Shadow Children Series a very very good read. I hope someone gets with Margaret Peterson Haddix and turns this series into a script. I think it would be a brillant movie and look for it to happen soon.

Good series if you like these type of books.
My grandson loves this series! We have bought every book and he can't wait to begin reading the next one. He has started reading another series by this author, I just don't remember the name.
I most say, as I read among the free. I was thinking, please don't kill anymore kids. I am so glad he came to himself, and realized he had been all his life. The freedom to choose.
I'm an 8th grade teacher and this series is popular in my classroom. I had to buy this book because the one I got with the set was stolen/borrowed and not returned. I guess when reluctant readers steal a book, it is a good sign. Plus, this series has a good message about how freedom isn't a RIGHT, it is a privilege that we must be willing to fight for. Teenagers today have such a sense of entitlement, I like to see them read about what can happen if we don't keep our government in check by being educated voters and standing up for what is right.
With AMONG THE FREE (Shadow Children #7) we come to the end of this beautifully crafted story of strife, the danger of an all too powerful government, hate, genocide, the importance of equality, love, inner strength, faith and the power of the human soul. Haddix clearly has a gift for emotionally charged story telling.

Although this last installment is a bit slower than the rest it's still a very strong read and definitely ends with a big bag. Captivating as the story comes full circle, returning the focus once again to Luke, who is clearly not the same boy who we were first introduced to.

The Shadow Children series is a touching and exciting ride from AMONG THE HIDDEN (Shadow Children #1) to the long awaited conclusion in AMONG THE FREE (Shadow Children #7). Haddix has undeniably created an inspiring story where humanity and basic common decency is put to the test.
This is a good book. Though others may disagree I give this book a four star rating. I have rated it four stars because of several reasons. First of all, the book is very interesting. When got a sample I felt very connected to it. I could not help clicking the purchase button. Also this story made me relieved that the main character and his other third child friends were finally free. Another good thing about this book is that Luke finally gets his courage up to stand up for what is right. This book would have been rated five stars if it would stop talking about poor Jen Talbot that died for freedom. Its ending could have been better too. It didn't talk about what happened to the characters enough. This book may have a few cons but it still is nice to read once in a while.
Luke is a third child illegal by the Population Police. In this final book in the series, the author writes about how Luke abandoned the Population Police and his life on the run until change is made for the people in his country.

Well, there are some slow moments in the book about Luke's life on the run among the others. This book ends abruptly without really clarifying the ending or what's to become of major characters throughout the seven book series. What changes have finally occurred in allowing third children to live legally?

The series is original in that concept. The whole series reminded me of George Orwell's novel, 1984, where the people were controlled by the government in all aspects of their lives. In this series, it's more believable. While it ended as it should, I think it could have been better in the final pages. I feel like it ended on a wimper than a bang. Maybe an epilogue about a year after the political uprising would have helped to see where the characters like Luke would be and hope for the better.
