Eviana has had her eighteenth birthday, but with it came a whole new experience of life. After running away from her would-be husband Kain the night before their marriage to be with her selkie boyfriend Brendan, Eviana had a few weeks of happy bliss. Those few weeks were shattered when she and her boyfriend were attacked by a group of other selkies, leaving Brendan horribly injured and without his skin to change again. Like Mers, selkies need to transition into their other selves in order to keep living. Without his skin, Brendan was trapped in human form, getting weaker and weaker by the day as he wasn't able to be his seal/selkie self. In desperation to save his life, Eviana called the only person she could think of that could help her, Kain-the man she slighted in front of everyone by denying. Kain is, naturally, upset, hurt, and confused about what he's supposed to do in the wake of her leaving him with the mantel of clan leader to fulfill alone after the death of his father, but also at the battle waging inside of him as the girl he loves asks him for help. Cursing and hating the way things are, he agrees to come and try to help her out, but when he gets there she learns that their people are on the brink of war , her mother has officially shunned her, mer-people have mind-control abilities over humans, selkies, and other mythical water creatures that until now she thought were extinct, and there's a madman on the loose looking for her and willing to do anything or kill anyone in order to get his hands on her.
After accidentally taking control of Brendan's mind (and several other selkies and humans) during a moment of high stress, things between them have become rocky at best and he's requested time without her in order to think things through. In the meantime, her parents have been murdered, the mantle of clan leader has fallen on her shoulders, and she has to step into her mothers all-too-big shoes to try and help prevent a full-out war from breaking out across the world. Kain, having established an alliance with the Dumahl clan even after she left him at the altar, stays by her side and they have to work together in order to plead with the mer-Council about the affairs of their people, the threats, and the murder now running rampant through the clans. As Eviana is trying to find reasonable and peaceful solutions to keep her clan and remaining family members safe, she is at war with her heart as she still loves and hopes Brendan will come back to her, Kian still shows her endless love, support, and understanding, and a young member of the council, Graham, vies for her attention as well.
Will Eviana be able to control her new-found mind-control abilities and not enslave Brendan again? Will Kain and Eviana be able to find a way to make peace with the mer-people and avoid a war or convince the council that Lucian Sutherland is a madman that needs to be stopped at all costs? This was a great book, #2 in the series and it keeps getting better and better. Eviana, has so much going on in her life, most of it bad. You will get caught up in her story!!!
Loved it as much as the first one!
Enjoyed it all. Great for a teenage read to.
This second book is filled with twist and turns that keep getting more interesting. Looking forward to the next installment of this series.
I think that you should just have a star rating...some people, like me aren't good with words..that is why i don't do this...plus I don't have time to sit and actually think about what I'm going to write. I don't care if it's posted or not but I would like to just be able to do the stars. AND I read so many books I don't always remember which ones they are. thanks!
This second book in the series far exceeded the first with character development and writing style. Introduction of eccentric characters and more involved plot made this book a star. CANNOT wait to read book 3. I am completely enthralled by the characters at this point and have a favorite (who happens to be new in this series, but I won't mention it since I would like to keep this spoiler free). This book more than makes up for any issues I had with the first in the series and is truly enjoyable. I keep reading parts of it over, and over, and over...well you get the picture.
Did you read Promises(Book#1 in series)yet? If you have, you know that this book is gonna be epic. If you haven't, you are hearing it from me; this book is EPIC! Without my giving away spoilers, I will tell you that Betrayal has a ton more action going on with twists coming at you from left, right, and under(that's possible in water). Oh, and from behind too. Who to trust? What to do? Keep up with Eviana as she finally learns how to kick some butt and defend herself. Will it be enough to protect the ones she loves? Even if she doesn't see it coming?
